It has been a great start to the year! Our opening project that all of out students collaborated on is "The Line that Connects Us All." <b>We are all unique but when we come together, at school, our lives touch and we are all connected.</b><br />

Each student was asked to create an artwork that represents themselves. In order to make it collaborative, the students were asked to draw a line between 2 dots on their papers (3 inches up from the bottom). When placed directly side by side each student's art connects with all the other students' art! The line that runs through all of the artworks is "The Line that Connects us All." <b>We are all unique but when we come together at school our lives touch and we are all connected.</b><br />

Once students bring these home they can connect their artworks at home with their siblings' art and a new collaborative work is born. In this case, the line illustrates their family connection.<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">First, 5th graders looked at the artwork of MC Escher. We focused on interpreting his artwork and admired his skillful use of shadows to create 3D effects. We also checked out some of his artwork with stairs. He has a lot of art with staircases but "Relativity" is a favorite!</span></div>

Next we practiced drawing stairs in 3D. We used rectangles, parallelograms and trapezoids and then added shadows keeping in mind the light source!<br />

After looking at Salvador Dali's surrealistic art, we read the book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dali%C2%AD-Path-Dreams-Anna-Obiols/dp/1845077776" target="_blank">Dali and the Path of Dreams</a>," to get a better understanding of surrealism. Students were asked to combine Salvador Dali's surrealism with MC Escher's stairs and create their own surrealistic work of art!<br />

We learned that Monet was one of the fathers of impressionism. Impressionist brushstrokes are created using dabs of color. Monet loved to paint water scenes so we created our own seascapes!<br />

It celebrates the uniqueness of each child within a larger “school of fish.” Each child’s brightly painted fish rock will join the “school of fish,” swimming together, and symbolizing our children entering the world. Altogether, around 6,000 rocks will be painted by Hudsonville art students in grades K-12. Stop out and enjoy the art!</span></div>

Fifth grade used the program "Acorn" to create their own versions of a famous abstract work of art. They were given access to a shared google folder that had folders dedicated to a variety of artists that they have learned about over the years and their famous works of art. Next they set to work learning to use Acorn (similar to Photoshop).<br />
<br />
Acorn is a simplified (and somewhat glitchy) version of Photoshop. I really liked using this with my older students because it is so close to Photoshop that I feel like they are getting something of a real world experience.<br />

<span class="s2"><i>Place yarn in ziplock bags with the tail sticking out and tell kids to treat the bag like a yo-yo... gently tugging at the tail (which is the only thing sticking out of the bag). Let the bag gently bob in the air as the string gradually comes out of the bag. I stapled the ziplock closed on either side of the string to keep it from falling back in the bag. Soon I will try out using the heavy duty ziplocks with a zipper... that might work better than staples which come out over time!</i></span><br />

This was a totally new experience for me because I have mostly stayed away from computer art partly because of computer availability but it finally felt like the right year to jump in! My first class was a huge learning curve for the kids AND myself. By the second class, my process for teaching on Acorn was SO much more streamlined! (Thanks kids for bearing with me!!!)<br />

Each year our fifth graders learn about the art of painter and architect: Friedrich Hundertwasser. Hundertwasser is a whimsical artist who really is amazingly creative. Some classes were able to learn more about Hundertwasser through the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hundertwasser-Kids-Harvesting-Barbara-Stieff/dp/3791340980/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368146932&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=hudertwasser" target="_blank">Hundertwasser for Kids: Harvesting Dreams</a>. This book gives a playful peak into the mind of the artist!<br />
<br />
After looking at artwork created by Hundertwasser, we came up with a list of common characteristic: colorful, buildings, faces, and lollypop trees. We used these characteristics to help guide our designs.<br />

First we talked about what a landscape is and then we painted our own landscapes using the cool color family (blue, green and purple) for the land and the warm color family (red, yellow, and orange) for the sky. We used a loose watercolor technique which involved blending colors and bending our paper to cause the colors to drip. <br />

Next, we practiced our brush technique for getting smooth edges as we painted our trees. Finally, it was time for embellishments. We used gold paint and jewels to embellish our Klimt trees. Klimt is well known for his use of gold paint!<br />

We talked about how objects that are close look big and things that are far away look small even if they are the same size in real life. We used a vanishing point and perspective lines to make our gardens look like they are going off into the distance.</div>

My favorite thing about this project is that it was almost entirely a student driven project. Here is how we did it:<br />
<br />
First, each class voted to select the theme. Next, we looked at other murals that also used the same theme. We critiqued them and talked about things that worked well on each, as well as some compositional pit falls that we wanted to avoid. This critique helped us to come up with some guidelines for our own drawings.<br />
<br />
Next, each student created a small scale sketch of what they would like to see on one of the mural panels. Students voted on which students should become leaders for each painting. After spending time sketching independently, the small groups (around 6 kids) got together to talk about their practice sketches. They picked their favorite parts to combine into one final group sketch. Each student drew their own part onto the final paper. (We had another project going during this process).<br />

After the final sketch was completed, it was projected and traced onto a 3 x 6 foot roll of canvas...<br />

Fourth graders are so enthusiastic about creating these Chinese dragons. We talked about the difference between the European dragon and the Chinese dragon. The Chinese dragon is a symbol of good luck and wisdom. It is a symbol of power for people who are worthy of it and a creature to be feared by fools and evildoers. The European dragon on the other hand is typically an unruly dreadful beast feared by all for its ruthlessness.<br />
<br />
We talked about how the appearance of the Chinese dragon has changed over time. It has become a creature that flies with a serpent's body, hawk claws, cow ears and the whiskers and scales of a carp (koi).<br />
<br />
We also learned the <a href="http://koistory.com/blog/koi-fish-meaning-and-myth" target="_blank">Chinese Waterfall Legend</a>. It tells if the koi fish that swam up the Yellow river against the current and tried for 100 years to jump up the waterfall. When he finally made it, he became a dragon that chases pearls of wisdom. We talked about the life lessons that this story teaches us such as perseverance.<br />

The dragon is a huge part of Chinese culture and makes many appearances at celebrations. We also watched some dragon dance videos while we worked. Notice that it is chasing a pearl of wisdom!</div>

The main art concept that we talked about during this project was color blending. We talked about how to layer colors to blend, and we talked about using water to help colors to smoothly transition on our papers.</div>

When we talk about blending, I explain that our goal is to use vibrant rainbow colors on our artwork, so it's important to know how to avoid brown.<br />
<br />
Next, we do some color math. I explain that to make brown, you combine all 3 primary colors. I write out this basic equation on the board...<br />

Red+Yellow+Blue = Brown<br />
<br />
Then, we <u>simplify the equation</u> a variety of ways:<br />
If, R+Y=O, and Y+B=G, and R+B=P, and <u>R+Y+B= Brown</u> then...<br />
(R+Y)+B= O+B =<i> Brown</i> ...or...<br />
(Y+B)+R= G+R <i>= Brown</i> ...or...<br />

As it turns out, when we simplify the equation we end up with complementary pairs: (notice that these are on the "NO" list).<br />

Why can't we blend secondary colors together Mrs. Seitz? To answer this question we expand the equations and discover that all 3 of the primary colors are present in the mixtures.<br />

Green + Purple = (Y+B)+(R+B)<br />
Purple + Orange = (B+R)+(R+Y)<br />

The color math really helps the kids understand the reasons behind what works and what doesn't. It also gives them a way to figure it out if they haven't memorized what works. When I teach it this way, it creates an ah-ha moment for many of the kids. At this point in the year, my 4th graders are really quite good with color concepts because we have already done our <a href="http://artwithmrsseitz.blogspot.com/2015/01/kandinsky-instruments.html" target="_blank">Kandinsky color mixing lesson with fractions</a>!<br />

First, students outlined their facial features on an 8.5 x 11 photograph. Then they colored the back of the photo with pencil. The pencil on the back of the paper worked like carbon paper and helped the kids transfer their outlines onto large paper. We taped the photo to each corner of the large paper and traced the photo outlines in each corner. The kids were very impressed with this reprinting trick!</div>

Kids in 5th grade created self-portraits using Chuck Close's grid photorealism technique.</div>

Chuck Close is known for creating huge portraits of people. At the beginning of his career, he created very realistic portraits (photo-realism). Later in life, after an illness, he found himself confined to a wheelchair. He still continues to create fabulous artwork square by square. Now his artwork is more abstract and colorful in nature. </div>

These creatures were based on the surrealist game "Exquisite Corpse." In this game, one artist draws part of a body and passes it to another player who adds on to it without knowing what has been drawn. Students first practiced the game with neighbors at their table. Next, they were randomly assigned a body part to draw on big paper. Mrs. Seitz pre-marked the 18 x 24 tagboard with lines so that any head could fit with any torso etc. After the body parts were drawn by the students they were placed randomly into groups of 4! <br />

Because color and groups of color are so important in art, we start kindergarten art with the color families. Older kids revisit these families often!<br />

<b>Rainbow Colors</b>: We started this year with <a href="http://artwithmrsseitz.blogspot.com/2015/11/rainbow-turtles.html" target="_blank">"Rainbow Turtles."</a> This project helped us learn rainbow order which gives us the context for all of the following color families! (The warm colors are the first part of the rainbow the cool colors are the last one. Once students know their primary colors they can figure out how to make the secondary colors because the secondaries are sandwiched in between the primaries!)<br />

<b>Warm Colors</b>: The <a href="http://artwithmrsseitz.blogspot.com/2012/10/warm-sun.html" target="_blank">"Warm Sun"</a> projects helps kids to visualize which colors are the warm colors. We also talk about that if we were able to "magically" go into the painting the temperature (created by the colors) looks like it would feel warm in the picture.<br />

<b>Cool Colors</b>: The <a href="http://artwithmrsseitz.blogspot.com/2012/10/cool-landscape.html" target="_blank">"Cool Landscape"</a> project gives us the opportunity to link cool colors with the cool temperature of mountains, grass and water.<br />
