ArtPrize "Collaboration Youth Award"

Only One You (Linda Kranz Series Book 1) by [Kranz, Linda]

Our rock fish won 1st prize in our category!
The kids won the "Collaboration Youth Award at ArtPrize! This award is the top award in our category with $5,000 dollars attached

ArtPrize is open and the Hudsonville Public Schools Art Program is participating in ArtPrize this year! This includes all of the students that I teach at Bauer and Forest Grove Elementary! We hit the ground running on the first day of school with acrylic paint!

ArtPrize Dates: September 20 - October 8, 2017
HPS Art Location: DeVos Place Convention Center, (outside, along the river)
Vote Code: 66018

This collaborative art project is based on the book, Only One You, by Linda Kranz. It celebrates the uniqueness of each child within a larger “school of fish.” Each child’s brightly painted fish rock will join the “school of fish,” swimming together, and symbolizing our children entering the world. Altogether, around 6,000 rocks will be painted by Hudsonville art students in grades K-12. Stop out and enjoy the art!

Thanks to Linda Kranz for permission to enter this project in ArtPrize.
Thanks to Jessica Moyes at Sharon Elementary for the inspiration.
Thanks to Maggie Bandstra (Alward Elementary) and Celine Nienhouse (South and Forest Grove Elementary Schools) for securing our fantastic venue and coordinating the installation!

Welcome Back!

This year all of my art classes will be starting with an all school project! We will be reading the story "The Crayon Boxed that Talked," by Shane DeRolf. Each student will design and individualize their own crayon with a self-portrait and some personal favorites!

Next, we will work on a graphic design project designing our own merchandise! This is a fundraiser for the art room. To learn more you can visit www.square1art.com . Look for ordering info in November!

Wearing the right clothes to art can help reduce stains!  I highly recommend sending your kids to art in a dark short sleeved shirt that is not a favorite or brand new.  While we do wear paint shirts every time we paint, accidents still happen when there are 20-30 kids all painting at the same time!  (...and it's not always your own child's fault).  The kids all know that if they have a sweater or sweatshirt on over their t-shirt it's a good idea to take it off and leave it on the table by the door before class starts!  Please especially avoid wearing long sleeved white button down shirts on art day!

If your child does come home with a stain encourage them to tell you right away so that you can use a Spray'n Wash product on it!!

Here is the schedule for art!

Square One Art Fundraiser 2014

Square 1 Art order forms are on their way home now through the beginning of next week!  The grade level that has the most students participate will win an extra clay project at Forest Grove and a chance to help paint the teacher's chair at Bauer!
Here are some examples of books that were bought this year for the art room with Square One Art fundraiser money! When you purchase products from Square 1 Art, a portion of the proceeds comes back to the art room! Our current supply budget covers the cost of all the basic consumable supplies (paint and paper, etc) that we need to create thousands of pieces of art each year.  Square 1 Art funds help the art room to add non-consumable teaching tools (like books, paint rollers, storage solutions etc).

When you order from Square 1 Art please order online if at all possible! (This makes keeping track of the paperwork easier and more accurate!)

Order Deadline at Forest Grove: November 12, 2014 (if you can get it in by Friday 7th that's even better :) )
Order Deadline at Bauer Elementary: November 11, 2014

Here is a sneak peek at what each grade level has done this year!

Kindergarten: Kids learned about the warm color family and watercolor painting techniques!

First Grade: Read the book "Hands: Growing up to Be an Artist" by author and illustrator Lois Ehlert. Each student created their own unique artwork using their hand as inspiration!

Second Grade: Created artwork inspired by Henry Rousseau. A great book about Rousseau was purchased this year with Square One Art funds!

Third Grade: Kids learned about and created radial symmetry!

Fourth Grade: Learned about Edgar Degas and created action figures!

Fifth Grade: Was given the opportunity to take this graphic designer job seriously and create artwork of their choice!

This year will be a BLAST!

Welcome back! It's been a great summer and now it's time to go back to school!
These murals were painted by Mrs. McManus's, Mrs. Laansma's ( Forest Grove Elementary) and Mrs. Rich's (Bauer Elementary) 2013-2014 classes!  We saved them over the summer and they are hanging and ready to welcome everyone back! Each student will add their own star to the mural on the first day of art!

Learning Goals: I can...
- Explain what a mural is
- Use art to create a welcoming environment
- Collaborate with other students on a group project

Thank you so much to all of the the parents who have volunteered at school this year! Thanks especially for hanging up all our kids' art in the halls! Wow.  Our school just wouldn't be such a great place without your help!  Special thanks to Mrs. Mulder's 3rd grade class and Mrs. Uthe's 2nd grade class for painting the mural in art!
